TUCSON, Ariz. – The Middle States section men’s team and Florida section women’s team saved their best tennis for when it mattered most: victories at the USTA League Adult 40 & Over 3.0 National Championships, held at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort.
In a tightly contested men’s 3.0 final, the Middle States team from Wesfield, N.J., narrowly defeated the Intermountain section team from Las Vegas, 3-2. Earlier in the day, Westfield won a semifinal that also went down to the wire against the Texas section team from Dallas, 3-2.
The Dallas men finished in third place by sweeping the Florida section from St. Ocala, 5-0.
The women’s 3.0 final was also filled with competitive matches, but the Florida team from Jacksonville pulled out the win over the Pacific Northwest section team from Portland, Ore., 3-2. The Florida women also showed their resilience during their semifinal earlier in the day, prevailing in another hard-fought battle over the Texas section team from San Antonio, 3-2.
Rebounding from their tough loss, the San Antonio women finished in third place by prevailing over the Missouri Valley section team from Stillwater, Okla., 3-2
