Guirlene Mimy-Matthews (William H. Shaw High School)

  • School I coach at:   William H. Shaw High School (Home of the Raiders)
Years Coaching High School Tennis:   2 years
Best High School Tennis Memory I've had is:

My favorite memory is one from a coaching perspective.
I started coaching high school girls tennis two years ago
and inherited a team that had been dismantled.  All of
our players with the exception of a few were returning
players.  Most of the team never played tennis.  We
needed some basic skills to rebuild.  We did not have
any funding.  I reached out to the CORTA Tennis Works
outreach program coordinator and she came to the
rescue!  She was able to sponsor us with team T-shirts
and provided us with two trained coaches who worked
with our students once a week.  As the season
progressed, we watched a player who was not able to
make contact with the ball and who also suffered
medically with seizures win her first match.  During the
season she stated that she had not suffered  any seizure
episodes since she started playing tennis.  Her sense of
    elation is a memory
    I will always cherish.

Another fond memory was when CORTA gave some of
the students the opportunity to attend the Atlanta Open
where we met Frances Tiafoe.  Being able to witness the
students' reactions while they watched a professional
    in person was priceless.

My goal is to help make tennis accessible to all and to
teach students that they can achieve anything they set
their mind to while gaining a deeper understanding of
    the game.
